XXX Universiade 2019 -2 (1)

The XXX. Summer Universiade (Universiadi estive 2019) was held in Naples, Italy, between 3 and 14 July 2019. The Universiade is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The name is a combination of the words “University” and “Olympiad”.

The Universiade is the largest multi-sport event in the world apart from the Olympic Games. The opening ceremony was held at San Paolo Stadium (Napoli), at the presence of the President of the Italian Republic, and included a special performance by Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli. The Corpo Italiano di San Lazzaro was alerted, together with some other civil protection organizations, by the Regional Government civil protection office to collaborate in the security of events. The Universiade has involved over 9300 athletes from 128 Countries, for 18 different sports disciplines, and 40 facilities for competitions and training, facilities located at different sites in the region and in the city area.

The Italian Corps was pleased to contribute to such a major international event that involved thousands of young people from many parts of the world, contributing to a manifestation of peaceful sporting competition and international friendship. This is also in consideration of the fact that the most of our volunteers were the same age as the Universiade athletes.
